Description

Server AV: Operating Systems Compatibility Matrix for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.x on Microsoft Windows

Summary

When Microsoft releases new operating systems or Service Packs, the original McAfee Product Guides might not reflect the current McAfee support policy for those platforms. Most of the following information is available in the Product Installation Guides and Release Notes. However, some of the information is available only in Product Management statements published in the McAfee KnowledgeBase.

For more information, see McAfee KB 51111

Microsoft Windows supported operating systems

The following tables list the McAfee products supported for use on Windows workstation and server operating systems.

NOTES:

  • McAfee updates the supportability information for each new Microsoft Windows operating system after this has been released to manufacturing and within 30 days of that release.
  • McAfee Support is often asked if there are any known issues on a new platform prior to our support statement being released. McAfee can confirm that there will minimally be an issue with the Buffer Overflow Protection. This feature will not work on new platforms until this feature has been updated with necessary code changes. This is typically done as part of the next Patch update for those products supported on the newer platform. The Buffer Overflow Protection feature fails silently in these conditions. Other features are generally expected to work as usual but until supportability is in this article McAfee cannot provide support for the newer platform.

If your operating system not listed

This point product is supported on the basis of the NT Kernel version used by the operating system rather than the operating system (version) in question. For VSE the latest supported NT Kernel is version 6.2.To verify which Kernel version your operating system uses, click Start, Run, type cmd and press ENTER. This returns your kernel version. For example, Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600].

NOTE: Where applicable, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are implied. Exceptions are noted explicitly.

1McAfee Agent (MA) 4.0 which is now End of Life (EOL) was the only version to support McAfee products on Windows 2000 Server. For MA supported environments details, see KB51573.
2Support for Windows NT stopped with Common Management Agent (CMA) 3.6.0 EOL on March 31, 2010.
3Patch 2 has not been fully certified by McAfee, but is compatible with Windows 8. Full support for Windows 8 will be provided when VSE 8.8 Patch 3 is released, which is expected to be within the fourth quarter 2012. This article will be updated when this is posted to the McAfee Downloads site. For support details about Patch 2 and 3, see KB74593.
4There are two known issues to be aware of with WEPOS:
  • Issue 1: On systems where the XP firewall is on by default or has been turned on through other means, VirusScan Enterprise will be unable to install. It is necessary to disable the XP firewall prior to installation of VirusScan Enterprise on these systems. Once installation of VirusScan Enterprise is complete, the XP firewall may be re-enabled.
  • Issue 2: The ScriptScan function in VirusScan will fail to scan scripts that reside on the desktop. It will properly scan scripts as they are being downloaded via Internet Explorer, in addition to scripts located anywhere else on the system.
5For Windows Embedded to be supported (minimum requirements), refer to KB60902. Thin clients and Enhanced Write Filtering (EWF) or File Based Web Filtering (FBWF) technology is not supported. Embedded operating systems are the same as their standard counterparts, except for licensing.
6Microsoft Windows 7 is supported from VSE 8.7i Patch 2 and later. For details, see KB60468.
7VSE 8.8 Patch 3 has been released to provide support only for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 operating systems. When Patch 4 is released, it will again be a single patch for use on all supported operating systems for VSE 8.8.
9The following applies to Windows 2000 Professional:
  • Dec 31, 2012 - EOS/EOL for VSE on Win2000.
  • Jan 1, 2013 - Dec 31, 2014 - VSE customers have option to purchase custom support on Win2000.
  • Dec 31, 2014 - EOL for Win2000 platform in Engine/DATs. End of all VSE custom support on Win2000.
10For the McAfee support policy for Enterprise Products on Windows XP SP3 beyond April 8, 2014, see KB78434.
11Win 8.1 is planned to be supported when VSE 8.8 Patch 4 is released. This article will be updated when this is posted to the McAfee Downloads site.
