Description

VPN: Unable to share Networked Printer over VPN

Resolution

Problem Definition:

Unable to share Networked Printer over VPN

Resolution or Workaround:

Follow these troubleshooting steps if you are unable to access a printer behind the remote end of a VPN tunnel:

  • Test the VPN tunnel to insure you are able to access other network resources behind the remote LAN.
  • Make sure the default gateway on the networked printer or the computer hosting the printer is set to the SonicWall's LAN IP address.
  • If the printer is hosted on another workstation, check the printer properties to make sure its sharing configuration is correct.
  • If the printer obtains its IP address automatically, change it to a static IP address or set up static DHCP mapping.

Static DHCP Mapping:

DHCP can be used to assign static IP addresses to computers on the LAN according to their MAC addresses. Follow these steps to configure static DHCP mappings.

Firmware 6.X:

  1. Select DHCP > Setup.
  2. Under Static Entries, click Add New Entry.
  3. Check "Enable this DHCP range".
  4. As prompted, enter the computer's assigned IP address, the corresponding Ethernet address, gateway IP, subnet mask, DNS info, etc.
  5. Click Update.

SonicOS Standard and Enhanced:

  1. Select Network > DHCP Server.
  2. Make sure "Enable DHCP Server" is checked.
  3. Click Add Static.
  4. Check "Enable this DHCP Entry".
  5. As prompted, enter a name for this mapping, the computer's assigned IP address, the corresponding MAC address, etc.
  6. Click OK, then Apply.
