SonicWall deprecates support for WEP and TKIP encryption on SonicOS 8.0.0

Description

SonicWall has officially deprecated support for WEP and TKIP encryption protocols. WPA replaced WEP in the early 2000s, and these older encryption standards are no longer considered secure and are vulnerable to attacks. It is crucial to upgrade your network security to more robust encryption standards like WPA2 or WPA3 to protect your sensitive data.

Products that will not Support WEP and TKIP (with the Release of SonicOS 8.0.0)

  • SonicWaves managed via SonicWall TZ80 running SonicOS 8.0.0 will be unable to configure WEP and use the TKIP encryption protocol.
  • Since TZ80 running SonicOS 8.0.0 supports in-product settings migration - If settings (EXP file) are imported from a SOHOW managing a SonicWave with WEP configured to the New SonicWall TZ80, the setting will be changed from WEP to WPA2_AUTO_PSK, and the password will be changed to the Firewall serial number when the settings file is imported.

Settings that have been deprecated:

  • WEP – Both (Open System and Shared Key)
  • WEP – Shared Key
  • Cipher Type: TKIP

Impact:

  • Security Risks: WEP and TKIP are susceptible to various attacks, including key cracking and packet injection.
  • Network Performance: Using outdated encryption protocols can degrade network performance and increase latency.
  • Compliance Issues: Many regulatory standards require the use of strong encryption protocols.

Recommended Action:

  • Configure Strong Encryption: Configure your wireless network to use WPA3 encryption.
  • Update Client Devices: Ensure all wireless devices connected to your network use the latest firmware and drivers to support strong encryption protocols.
