How to upgrade On-Prem NSM via System Update?

Description

The reasons why we go for "System Update" for NSM:

  • In some cases where we do not find the SWI file for NSM to upgrade to a newer build.  We can see only new installation file and SWI upgrade file is missing,
  • NSM is built on SonicCore OS, and sometimes there are changes pushed at SonicOS level, SWI upgrade will do just the NSM version upgrade but not the SonicOS upgrade. When doing the "System Update", we upgrade the SonicOS Build and it may also update the NSM version.

Resolution

Here are the steps described to upgrade NSM via "System Update":

1. Connect to your NSM Console using hypervisor:

Here we can see that NSM version is 2.3.2-R12-H2
Build name is 6.5.0-604

Build name mentions the SonicOS version.

NOTE: The user may see different build number or NSM version on their system depending upon the version their system is on.

2. Go to System Update and choose "Start Update", it will start looking for the latest update.

NOTE: Make sure the system is able to resolve these two URLs:

  • updates.soniccore.cloud.eng.sonicwall.com
  • cdn.1.updates.soniccore.cloud.eng.sonicwall.com

3. After checking for updates, it will find the new version of SonicOS to upgrade, click on "Begin Update":

In this example, it shows that current installed SonicOS build is 6.5.0-604 and New build is 6.5.0-616.

4. The update process will start, do not click anywhere on the system or reboot the system during this process, wait for it to finish the upgrade:

5. We should reboot the system to complete the upgrade:

6. Go to Reboot|Shutdown-> Reboot NSM-> Reboot-> Yes:

7. Once the system is up, you will notice updated NSM version and SonicOS version.

CAUTION: System which are already updated with latest SonicOS version and are running lower version of NSM, may not be able to upgrade using system Update option. They can chose to upgrade NSM using SWI file and If SWI file is not available we need to install NSM using installation file along with NSM Backup and Restore option.
