SonicWall Gen 7 Upgrades – More Than a Hardware/Software Opportunity

Partners who see upgrades as an opportunity to sell new hardware and software are missing out on the larger opportunity and may be shortchanging customers at the same time.

What Are You Upgrading?

It’s likely your immediate answer to that question was ‘the SonicWall firewalls.”

SonicWall has already taken care of that. We’ll discuss the ways in which we’ve improved them in Gen 7, but first its important to focus on what you are actually upgrading: Your customer’s data and network security. We focus on the products so you can focus on the solutions.

To most effectively upgrade your customers’ protection, you must first come to understand where their security would benefit most from upgraded hardware, software, and services.

Initial Upgrade Consulting

The very first engagement you’ll want to perform for each customer is initial consulting to inventory and evaluate their current state and then define their desired future state. Once this is done you can plan, propose, and perform all the actions required to achieve that future state.

During this initial consulting, keep a careful eye out for situations in which the improvements in SonicWall Gen 7 Next Generation FireWalls (NGFW) will benefit your customer, including:

Sheer Performance – Between more demanding apps, video streaming, more and more mobile users, and greater demand, the need for increased speed never stops accelerating. Firewalls must allow greater bandwidth without sacrificing protection. SonicWall Gen 7 NGFWs deliver four times greater firewall, DPI, and IPSec performance.

Scalability – The larger an organization grows, the more concurrent connections it will require to efficiently scale. SonicWall Gen 7 TZ firewalls provide up to 15 times as many maximum connections as Gen6 did.

Port Density – Since their last deployment, it is very possible your customer has been adding more and more devices to their network, creating a need for more ports to connect them to. SonicWall Gen 7 TZ Series firewalls offer multi-gigabit interfaces at 2.5, 5, and 10G or fiber interfaces offering at least 8 ports, a significant increase from the previous 5 in Gen6.

Memory – SonicWall Gen 7 TZ firewalls have expandable memory up to 256GB. This facilitates caching, logging, backups, updates, and more.

Power – Customers who have experienced the failure of a power supply will appreciate the redundant power supply included in TZ570 and TZ670 NGFWs.

Virtual Services – Offering 8 times more site-to-site virtual private network (VPN) tunnels and 5 times more virtual local area network (VLAN) connections supports more flexible logical separation of devices and better security for more remote locations.

Your Consultative Value

Obviously, not all your customers will need all these improvements. The fact that their existing equipment will soon enter retirement phase eventually justifies direct upgrading of individual units, but your consultative value lies in helping them identify and take advantage of the improvements their specific environment will benefit from most.
