Overview:

To make a console cable for SMA 1000 series hardware platforms, a straight-through CAT5 cable and a standard DB9 connector are used.

To create the cable, start with a straight-through CAT5 cable. One end is not changed and the other side is changed as noted in the diagram below. Cut off one side and pin out the cut side with a new RJ-45 connector as shown in the diagram.

Pin the DB connector as shown in the pin outs for DB in the diagram. Flow control is shown, if needed.

DB Connector:

  • RJ-45 side DB-9 side
  • 8(White) 8
  • 7(Brown) 6
  • 6(Yellow) 2
  • 5(Green) 5
  • 4(red) 5
  • 3(Black) 3
  • 2(Orange) 4
  • 1(Blue) 7

NOTE: pins 2,4 and 7 are not used on the DB9 connector side of cable, these wires can be clipped off if desired.

The cable can be only connected in one direction. The standard straight through side is connected to the appliance, the customer pinned side is connected to the DB9 connector. When connecting with a terminal program set the serial port settings to the following:

  • Bits per second = 115200
  • Data bits = 8
  • Parity = none
  • Stop bits = 1
  • Flow control = none
