  4. Choosing Renew or Upgrade:

After entering your activation key, you will need to choose between two options: Renew or Upgrade. The correct choice depends on whether you want to use the new key's quantity or increase the number of users.

    • Renew:

      • What it does: The Renew option uses the user quantity from the new activation key. Any remaining time and value on your current license will be prorated and combined with the new license term. It does not simply extend the existing quantity's duration.
      • Example 1: You currently have 5 users licensed with 6 months remaining. You enter a new activation key for 5 users for 1 year. Choosing Renew will result in 5 users licensed for 1.5 years (the original 6 months' value is prorated and added to the new 1 year).
      • Example 2: You currently have 5 users licensed with 6 months remaining. You enter a new activation key for 10 users for 1 year. Choosing Renew will result in 10 users licensed for 1 year and 3 months (5 users x 6 months = 10 users x 3 months).
    • Upgrade:

      • What it does: The Upgrade option increases the number of users covered by your license. The new key's user quantity is added to your existing quantity. Any remaining time on your current license will be prorated based on the combined user count.
      • Example: You currently have 5 users licensed with 6 months remaining. You enter a new activation key for 5 users for 1 year. Choosing Upgrade will result in 10 users licensed for 9 months. This is calculated as follows:
        • Original license: 5 users * 6 months = 30 user-months
        • New license: 5 users * 12 months = 60 user-months
        • Total: 30 + 60 = 90 user-months
        • Combined users: 5 (original) + 5 (new) = 10 users
        • Prorated duration: 90 user-months / 10 users = 9 months

Important Considerations:

  • Proration: Both Renew and Upgrade options use proration. This ensures you don't lose any remaining value from your existing license.
  • Accuracy: Double-check your activation key before entering it.
  • Tenant Selection: Ensure you have selected the correct tenant and Cloud Secure Edge Serial number before activating your license.
  • Contact Support: If you have any questions or encounter any issues during the activation process, contact SonicWall support.
