How to configure the SonicWall WAN /X1 Interface with PPTP Connection?

Description
Configuring the SonicWall WAN interface (X1 by default) with PPTP Settings. (Other WAN configuration: DHCP, PPPoE, Static IP or L2TP)
Resolution
Resolution for SonicOS 7.X
This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.5 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 7.X firmware.
Procedure:
PPTP mode: Use this mode if your ISP is using a PPTP connection. To configure this mode:
1. Click Network in the top navigation menu.
2. Navigate to System | Interfaces tab.
3. Click Configure for the WAN interface (X1 by default).
4. Under IP assignment, choose PPTP from the drop-down menu.
5. Enter the User name and User password given by the ISP.
6. Specify the PPTP server IP address given by the ISP under the PPTP server IP address.
7. The PPTP (Client) Host name will be given by the ISP.
8. After entering these configurations, click the Release button and then the Renew button.
9. Click OK to update your configurations.
How to test the connectivity:
1. Click Device in the top navigation menu. Navigate to Diagnostics. Choose Ping from the “Diagnostic Tools” drop-down.
2. Ping your ISP’s Default Gateway or any IP that is pingable on the Internet (e.g. 4.2.2.2).
3. Also try to ping a website (eg: www.google.com) to ensure that the DNS resolution is working.
Resolution for SonicOS 6.5
This release includes significant user interface changes and many new features that are different from the SonicOS 6.2 and earlier firmware. The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 6.5 firmware.
Procedure:
PPTP mode: Use this mode if your ISP is using a PPTP connection. To configure this mode:
1. Click Manage in the top navigation menu.
2. Navigate to System Setup | Network | Interfaces tab.
3. Click Configure for the WAN interface (X1 by default).
4. Under IP assignment, choose PPTP from the drop-down menu.
5. Enter the User name and User password given by the ISP.
6. Specify the PPTP server IP address given by the ISP under the PPTP server IP address.
7. The PPTP (Client) Host name will be given by the ISP.
8. After entering these configurations, click the Release button and then the Renew button.
9. Click OK to update your configurations.
How to test the connectivity:
1. Click Investigate in the top navigation menu. Navigate to Tools | System Diagnostics. Choose Ping from the “Diagnostic Tools” drop-down.
2. Ping your ISP’s Default Gateway or any IP that is pingable on the Internet (e.g. 4.2.2.2).
3. Also try to ping a website (eg: www.google.com) to ensure that the DNS resolution is working.
Resolution for SonicOS 6.2 and Below
The below resolution is for customers using SonicOS 6.2 and earlier firmware. For firewalls that are generation 6 and newer we suggest to upgrade to the latest general release of SonicOS 6.5 firmware.
Procedure:
PPTP mode: Use this mode if your ISP is using a PPTP connection. To configure this mode:
1. Click the Network|Interfaces tab.
2. Click Configure for the WAN interface (X1 by default).
3. Under IP assignment, choose PPTP from the drop down menu.
4. Enter the User name and User password given by the ISP.
5. Specify the PPTP server IP address given by the ISP under PPTP server IP address.
6. The PPTP (Client) Host name will be given by the ISP.
7. After entering these configurations, click the Release button and then the Renew button.
8. Click OK to update your configurations.
