Description
This article details the process for upgrading GMS 8.1 to GMS 8.2. It includes a step-by-step upgrade path which must be followed to successfully complete the upgrade. You CANNOT upgrade directly from GMS 8.1 to 8.2 (Analyzer 8.1 to 8.2).
Resolution
Upgrade Path for GMS 8.2
Here are the steps for upgrading GMS / Analyzer 8.1 to 8.2:
- Always take a backup of the GMS system
- Install GMS 8.1 SP1 and reboot the system
- Apply 8.1 Hotfix 173751 and reboot the system
- Apply 8.1 Hotfix 178719 and reboot the system
- Apply upgrade to GMS 8.2 and reboot the system upon upgrade completion
NOTE: To avoid data corruption, you must reboot the GMS server after installing each hotfix and login to the /sgms (application) interface.
Step by Step Instructions for Upgrading from GMS 8.1 to GMS 8.2
- Always take a backup of GMS / Analyzer before any upgrades or Hotfixes. Label and save your backups in a safe location.
- On your GMS 8.1 appliance, go to the System | Settings page and check the GMS installation history to verify what patches and Hotfixes are installed. Next install GMS 8.1 Service Pack 1.
For full instructions about installing GMS 8.1 Service Pack 1, please refer to the following article: Upgrading from GMS 7.2 to GMS 8.1 - Once GMS 8.1 SP1 is installed, reboot the system and login to the https:/x.x.x.x/sgms (application) interface of the GMS once and then switch to the /appliance interface and apply GMS / Analyzer 8.1 Hotfix 173751.
TIP: When applying 8.1 Hotfix 173751, a check for GMS / Analyzer 8.1 SP1 will be made. If your GMS / Analyzer current version is not 8.1 SP1, the installation of 8.1 Hotfix 173751 will stop and ask you to upgrade to 8.1 SP1 first.
- Once 8.1 Hotfix 173751 is installed, reboot the system and login to the https:/x.x.x.x/sgms (application) interface of the GMS once and then switch to the /appliance interface and apply 8.1 Hotfix 178719.
NOTE: When applying 8.1 Hotfix 178719, a check for GMS / Analyzer 8.1 Hotfix 173751 will be made. If your GMS / Analyzer current version does not have 8.1 Hotfix 173751 installed, the installation of 8.1 Hotfix 178719 will stop and ask you to install 8.1 Hotfix 173751 first.
- Once GMS 8.1 Hotfix 178719 is installed, reboot the GMS system once again and then login to the https://x.x.x.x/sgms (application) interface and then switch to /appliance interface and apply upgrade to GMS 8.2.Accept the GMS User Agreement to install GMS 8.2.
TIP: When upgrading to GMS / Analyzer 8.2, a check for 8.1 Hotfix 178719 will be made, if your GMS / Analyzer current version does not have 8.1 Hotfix 178719, the installation of GMS 8.2 will stop and ask you to apply 8.1 Hotfix 178719 first.
- Once GMS 8.2 is installed, you must reboot the GMS host server before using GMS 8.2:
- On a GMS Windows upgrade, you must reboot the Windows OS after GMS 8.2 upgrade.
- On a GMS Virtual Appliance (VA) upgrade, you must reboot the Virtual Appliance after GMS 8.2 upgrade.
If you do not reboot the GMS host server after a GMS 8.2 upgrade, you will risk corrupting the GMS 8.2 database. To recover from a database corruption, open a support ticket with SonicWall.
NOTE: When upgrading to GMS / Analyzer 8.2, a check for 8.1 Hotfix 178719 will be made, if your GMS / Analyzer current version does not have 8.1 Hotfix 178719, the installation of GMS 8.2 will stop and ask you to apply 8.1 Hotfix 178719 first. After applying 8.1 Hotfix 178719, you can then upgrade to GMS 8.2.

The above steps are only required when upgrading GMS 8.1 to 8.2 (Analyzer 8.1 to 8.2). When performing a new installation of GMS / Analyzer 8.2, no Hotfixes are needed. The 8.2 installation process is able to differentiate between a GMS 8.1 to 8.2 (Analyzer 8.1 to 8.2) upgrade process versus a new GMS / Analyzer 8.2 installation process.
