SonicWall Access Points
SonicWall Access Points Port Description
There are two ethernet ports Lan1 and Lan2 and a Console Port. Power over Ethernet (POE) Injector
- Locate "DATA IN" and cable to X2 port on the TZ appliance
- Locate "DATA & POWER OUT" and cable to LAN1/POE port on the SonicPoint
- A SonicPoint POE Injector is bundled in the SonicPoint ACe/ACi/N2 with POE Injector option
SonicWall TZ series
The TZ series consists:
- TZ 300 and TZ300W
- TZ 400 and TZ400W
- TZ 500 and TZ500W
- TZ 600
- TZSOHOW
SonicWall X-Series Solution
What is the SonicWall X-Series solution?
Customers often needs to manage critical network elements such as firewall, switch individually. The SonicWall X-Series solution allows unified management of both the firewall and the switch using the firewall UI and GMS. For example the maximum number of interfaces available on the SonicWall TZ-Series models range from 5 (TZ300) to 10 (TZ600). In certain customer deployments, the number of ports required might easily exceed the maximum number of interfaces available on the SonicWall TZ-Series firewalls. With SonicWall X-Series solution, ports on the X-Series Switch can be viewed as "extended" interfaces of the firewall thereby increasing the number of interfaces available for use.
X-Series Switches
What X-Series Switch models are supported in SonicWall X-Series solution?
- X1008 and X1008P (8 ports with POE option)
- X1018 and X1018P (18 ports with POE option)
- X1026 and X1026P (26 ports with POE option)
- X1052 and X10532 (52 ports with POE option)

SonicWall TZ Series Ports
- Here is an overview of the TZ series ports for each product.
- The X0 port is assigned to LAN and the X1 port is assigned to WAN. Some products have more ports than others but each product is functionally the same.
Setup a TZ Series Product for SonicWall Access Points
Our example includes a TZ 300.
- Initialize TZ 300 with Setup Wizard. The Setup Wizard automatically assigns ports (X3,X4) to the X0 (LAN) portshield group. Port X2 is left undefined. Internet access is provided through the X1 (WAN) port.
- SonicWall manages SonicWall access points in the WLAN zone. SonicWall access points in the WLAN zone are auto detected and deployed.
To setup the SonicWall TZ for SonicWall Access Points:
- Assign port X2 to the WLAN zone.
- Assign a static IP address to port X2, for example you can assign a private static IP address of 172.16.31.1 to port X2. The SonicWall will automatically create a DHCP server on port X2 with a DHCP scope of (172.16.31.2 to 172.16.31.254)
Cabling a TZ300 to a SonicWall Access Points
Locate the SonicPoint LAN1/POE port. Connect the LAN1 port to the supplied POE Injector "DATA & POWER OUT" port or POE capable network switch port (must be 802.3at compliant and capable of providing 25 watts).
- Locate the SonicWall WLAN (X2) port and connect to the POE network switch or POE Injector "DATA IN" port.
Connecting a SonicWall X-Series solution to a SonicWall Access Points
The SonicWall X-Series solution allows for the provisioning of X-Series switches on SonicWall firewalls as "Extended Switches". Ports on the "Extended Switch" can be PortShield to the WLAN zone of the SonicWall, to which we can connect SonicPoints access points. When connecting SonicPoint access points to a X-Series switch, it is important to consider the SonicPoint's power requirements. SonicWall access points requires a minimum of 25.5 watts. You must use a SonicWall power injector if your X-Series switch model does not support POE+.
- X1008P and X1018P does not support POE+, you must use a SonicPoint POE+ Power Injector (25.5watts or better) with these switches
- X1026P and X1052P does support POE+ but only on switch port 1 -12
- POE (Power Over Ethernet) provides up to15.4 watts
- POE+ (Power Over Ethernet Plus) provides 25.5 watts, POE+ is required by SonicWall access points
Here we have provisioned a X-Switch X1026P with ports 1 - 4 PortShield to the WLAN zone of the SonicWall, to which we have connected a SonicWall access point. Ports 1 -12 on the X1026P supports POE+ and can power SonicWallaccess points.

For details about which models of X-Series switches has support for POE+ (POE+ ports are required for SonicPoint ACe/ACi/N2) , see KB186709
Here the SonicWall access point is connected through the X-Switch to the SonicWall. The access point has been auto detected and deployed.
TZ 300 managing a SonicWall Access Point walkthrough
- We have just initialized a SonicWallTZ 300 with the setup wizard
- Next we will configure the TZ 300 for a SonicWall Access Point
- Here at network interfaces the X2 port is not assigned to any zone.
- Assign the X2 port to the WLAN zone
Assign X2 the private IP address of 172.16.31.1
- In this example we will accept the other default settings and click okay
- Here we have connected the SonicWall access point to the X2 WLAN port. The access point has been auto detected and deployed.
