Understanding Stateful Packet Inspection
Understanding the difference between stateful and deep packet inspection filtering is critical when it comes to securing your network. Consider the security you face at an airport. When an airport official compares your boarding pass to your identification, they are determining if you should be allowed to pass into the boarding area. This is quite similar to stateful packet inspection where the firewall checks to see if data packets were requested and whether they should be allowed into the company’s network. Because many threats can be viruses that originate from within a company’s email service, this level of protection is easily bypassed.
Understanding Deep Packet Inspection
Deep packet inspection can be understood by building on the airport analogy. In the airport, as you pass through security you not only have to show your boarding pass, but also your bag is scanned to determine if it contains dangerous articles. This extra step helps to not only establish that you belong on the plane, but also that the contents you are bringing aboard are safe and approved. This bag scanning is quite similar to deep packet inspection. SonicWALL TZ and NSA Series solutions utilize a deep packet inspection engine to match downloaded, emailed and compressed files against an extensive and continuously updated database of signatures written by the SonicWALL SonicALERT team and third-party sources. This comparison provides intelligent, real-time network security protection against sophisticated application layer and content-based attacks.
SonicWALL Offers the Complete Solution for Your Network
SonicWALL deep packet inspection is packaged as the SonicWALL Gateway Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware and Intrusion Prevention Service with Application Firewall included on the NSA Series. This combination of services acts as an added layer of security by delivering application layer attack protection not only against external threats, but also against those originating inside the network.
In addition to one of SonicWALL’s latest generation UTM appliances, SonicWALL Secure Upgrade solutions provide all the security services and support you need for complete network protection.
The SonicWALL solution is unique in its ability to handle unlimited file sizes and virtually hundreds of thousands of concurrent downloads, providing ultimate scalability and performance for growing networks.
